Sporting chance for higher education

It was reported in The Age today that Education Minister Simon Crean has promised a re-elected Labor government would try to make it possible for universities to once more charge students compulsory amentities fees (to pay for sporting facilities, health clinics and other non-academic services).

The re-introduction of a student services charge would greatly assist universities in offering a full suite of on-campus services and amenities.  These services are not trivial – they contribute significantly to student engagement and to the quality of the academic and social experience, leading to student retention and better outcomes.
